Programme

Walton Spitfire Prelude and Fugue
Walton Viola Concerto
Barber Adagio for Strings
Bernstein Symphonic Dances from West Side Story

Written as part of his score for the 1942 film The First of the Few, Walton's Spitfire Prelude and Fugue is performed this evening to mark the 70th anniversary of Battle of Britain, whilst Walton's Viola Concerto will feature seventeen year old Alex Mitchell, CLYO section leader and Principal Viola of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.

Barber's Adagio for Strings is often described as the saddest piece of classical music ever written. Indeed, it has been used for such occasions as the announcement of President Roosevelt's death and the funeral of Einstein. The piece can also be heard on the soundtrack to the films Platoon and The Elephant Man and, more surprisingly, has been sampled by many DJs in various popular dance versions.

The concert is completed in style with the exciting, jazz and Latin-inspired Symphonic Dances from West
Side Story. Bernstein composed the soundtrack for the hit musical, later arranging this suite of orchestral
music from the music in nine parts, including Mambo, Cha-Cha and Somewhere.
